Summer School program at Warrnambool

'Felt making and its creative possibilities'

Course Overview

Day 1 Felt Basics.
Aimed at students with no previous knowledge of feltmaking. Demonstrations of technique used followed by students making samples and checking for shrinkage. How thick? How many layers? Make prefelts. Samples.

Day 2 Texture and embellishments
Simple scarf. Students make felt decorating it with silks, threads, wools and prefelts.

Day 3 Painting with wool and use of resists.
Create a picture using wool as your 'paint' Demonstrate and experiment with resists in the wool, to add interest and make pockets and flaps. Students make small item, book cover, bag, spectacle case etc, using both of these techniques.

Day 4 and 5 Project
Using their skills gained over the last 3 days, students plan and complete a project. This may be a piece of fabric for a garment, cushion cover, a shawl or scarf, baby blanket, wall hanging etc.

About the instructor

Jane Robson
Jane is a trained Special Education teacher and has been making felt for the past 5 years. Jane, along with her friend, have won prizes for felted Wearable Art garmentsin Fashion Fantasia 2005 in Hobart and a first in the Wearable Art category TAWFA (The Australian Wool Fashion Awards) Armidale NSW in 2008.

 

Materials

Participants are required to bring the following:
• 1 painters drop sheet
• 3 old towels
• 1 ice cream container
• 1 kitchen sponge
• 1 piece of net curtaining (try op shop)
• Wool tops (available for purchase from the tutor in 50 and 100 gram bags)
• silks
• threads
• cotton voile
• knitting wool (not machine washable. Anything that is a natural fibre cotton, rayon silk. Not polyester it will
not felt. Silk scarves from the op shop are fabulous).
• scissors
• thread
• pins
• creativity and enthusiasm essential!
