'Genealogy - family history workshops'

Do you know your family history? Genealogy - family history workshops can help you find out. This course will show you everything you need to know to kick start your discovery into the past.

Course Overview

Workshop 1 - Introduction to Genealogy - How do I begin?
* Forms and charts
* Taking and organising genealogical notes
* Filing certificates and documents
* Basic certificates and records

Workshop 2 - Genealogy Records - How do I find my Australian ancestors?
* More on certificates
* Introduction to the sources (indexes, directories, census, military records, etc)

Workshop 3 - Shipping and Convict Records - When and how did my ancestors arrive in Australia?
* Introduction to shipping and immigration records
* Introduction to the processes involved in convict research and relevant sources

Workshop 4 - Overseas Research - Where are my ancestors from?
* How to conduct overseas research
* Introduction to overseas records and sources
* Research using the Internet

About the instructor

Leonie Doorey
Leonie Doorey has over 30 years experience in genealogical research and extensive knowledge of Australian, New Zealand and European genealogical sources and records and processes. Her research business has one of the largest private historical and genealogical library collections in Australia.

Over the past few years Leonie has given talks on subjects such as the Gold Rush in Australia and America, Women of the Colony, Convicts and Early Immigration. Her series of workshops have been popular in both Sydney metropolitan and country NSW areas. A shortened version is held during History Week each year.

Leonie also enjoys working with the Australian National Maritime Museum as a tour guide showing visitors around the Museum, the HMAS Onslow Submarine and the Endeavour Replica. She ardently supports the conservation of Australian heritage and is particularly passionate about Rookwood Cemetery.

 

Materials

Participants will need to bring
• lever arch folder
• pen
• pencil
• rubber
• loose leaf notepaper
It would be helpful but not necessary for participants to bring along a small amount of information about their
family, including - your birth certificate, any other birth, marriage and death certificates you have
