The first half day session will involve an introduction to children's literature, an examination of dominant discourses that frame child identities through books and films and a close reading of classic narratives to uncover the foundational myths and ideas underpinning literature for young people. The following three sessions will involve practical exercises and seminar discussions designed to give participants tools for analyzing picture books, identifying ideology and values embedded in texts for children and young adults, and an understanding of the various approaches to Indigenous children's texts. The aim of the course is to enable participants to critically engage with a range of children's literature and to develop strategies for learning and teaching that can be utilized at home and at school.
