Turning behaviour around - a 2 day program - 2012

For beginning and experienced teachers

Deakin University, at Greenwood Park, Burwood

This 2 day accredited seminar workshop provides teachers with opportunities to:

  • gain knowledge, understanding and insights into student behaviour
  • acquire practical skills and strategies to use in the classroom and school
  • work with a process that makes sense of behaviour management
  • focus on behaviour issues and work through case studies
  • discuss and share ideas with colleagues, ask questions and reflect on teaching practice

Day 1

Session 1
Planning for Management Working preventively

  • Building on core values
  • Making rules work
  • On-going planning - introducing a process for effective management and a strategy for taking control

Session 2
Understanding Behaviour

  • What motivates behaviour?
  • A teacher's changing role
  • How effective is your response?
  • Moving from a position of strength

Session 3
Developing a management process

  • Continuing the control strategy
  • Practical skills to achieve cooperation and respect
  • Skills to empower teachers and build students' emotional & social competency

Day 2

Session 1
Continuing the management process

  • Options for effective follow through
  • Skills to achieve responsibility and self-discipline.
  • Reframing mindsets - enhancing self worth
  • Working for and achieving positive outcomes

Session 2
Managing those more difficult behaviours

  • Discipline, punishment, rewards - what works?
  • What do I do when they challenge, refuse, deny etc?
  • Turning behaviour around
  • Specific behaviour issues e.g. bullying, autistic, defiant behaviours etc.

Session 3
Making it work in the classroom and school

  • Questions and answers - further practical suggestions & case studies
  • Developing colleague support - the task of Professional Learning Teams
  • A whole school approach

Presenter: Jenny Mackay is a classroom management and discipline skills specialist with a very practical 'in the classroom', non-didactic approach to behaviour management skills training. She has taught in the United Kingdom, the U.S.A., South Africa and Australia. Jenny has presented to teachers at conferences, seminars and individual schools in Metropolitan Melbourne and throughout country Victoria.
