Internships

Publishing House Internships are a great way to get to know the industry, to work out what industry area in professional and creative writing you want to develop. There are two levels of internship:

  • Undergraduate - Professional and Creative Writing Internship ALW351
  • Postgraduate - Creative Industries Internship ALX721

The Professional and Creative Writing Internship (ALW351) is offered to students in their third year of the BA - Professional & Creative Writing. The internship allows students to undertake activities such as research and writing for a variety of media and formats and/or editing and involvement with publishing projects.

Possible host organisations include publishing houses, freelance creators, not-for-profit organisations, and media, communications and information units of institutions and public organisations.

For further information check the website: www.deakin.edu.au/arts-ed/internships/domestic/units.php and look at the range of material including description of ALW351.

The Creative Industries Internship (ALX721) is a postgraduate coursework unit offered to students in the Master of Arts (Professional Communications) and Master of Arts (Writing and Literature). Those interested should go to the website: http://www.deakin.edu.au/arts-ed/internships/postgrad/ and look at the requirements and eligibility.

There is an expression of interest form to complete (obtain a copy from karenler@deakin.edu.au), and this requires potential interns to negotiate a clear project and employer agreement before the formal application is submitted.

Possible internships could include writing/editing roles in magazine or book publishing, communications or project officers in professional associations or not-for-profit organisations, arts event managers or festival coordinators, information support officers in local councils, script or other writing/editing project developers in a range of creative projects.
