Gillian Syres - professional/technical writer

Gillian Syres was driven to do her BA through a love of reading as much as writing. ‘I always found out who the teachers were and read all their work first’, she says. ‘That way I'd know where they were coming from in advance.

Gillian is loath to call herself a writer, but when pressed will admit that she writes just about every day, ‘but only for work.’ She works as a research nurse and study co-ordinator. Her writing practice includes ethics submissions, reports, plain language statements for patients and many other tasks which require a precise use of language. Gillian is uniquely situated to benefit from the skills learnt in the writing course.

In some ways the work I do reminds me of crafting a piece of fiction for an assignment, although regulators and university ethics committees tend to mark a little harder than your average academic.

Gillian is discovering that in the industry in which she works her writing skills are a valuable and attractive asset for employers.
