Gillian Syres - professional/technical writer
Bachelor of Arts - Writing Major*
Gillian Syres was driven to do her BA through a love of reading as much as writing. ‘
I always found out who the teachers were and read all their work first’, she says. ‘
That way I'd know where they were coming from in advance.’
Gillian is loath to call herself a writer, but when pressed will admit that she writes just about every day, ‘
but only for work.’ She works as a research nurse and study co-ordinator. Her writing practice includes ethics submissions, reports, plain language statements for patients and many other tasks which require a precise use of language. Gillian is uniquely situated to benefit from the skills learnt in the writing course.
In some ways the work I do reminds me of crafting a piece of fiction for an assignment, although regulators and university ethics committees tend to mark a little harder than your average academic.’
Gillian is discovering that in the industry in which she works her writing skills are a valuable and attractive asset for employers.
