I decided to 'step outside the square' to do my internship, by undertaking the subject interstate! So I packed up my things and headed to Adelaide for 5 months, where I completed two placements.
My first internship was with Ball Public Relations – one of Adelaide's largest PR consulting firms. At Ball PR I was able to sit in on staff and client meetings, observe their media training program, research case studies, and complete a number of written tasks. I was also fortunate to be able to go 'on the road' with one of the consultants to brief a client that was about to be interviewed by the Channel 7 News!
My second internship was with the South Australian Government's Department of Correctional Services. I worked with the Corporate Communications Manager in a pro-active support role. My responsibilities included editing and critiquing the Departments’ website, along with a Strategic Recruitment Plan. I also wrote an article for the Departments’ newsletter on a new prison control room opening and wrote a media release for the local paper about a community rehabilitation program for prisoners. I was also taken on a tour of the Adelaide Remand Centre at the end of my time working with the Department.
I made the decision to undertake my internships interstate to broaden my career prospects and to experience working in another Australian capital city. I believe that my internship experience will demonstrate my initiative to potential employers and willingness to adapt to different and diverse working environments!
I would highly recommend that all students undertake this subject to help them gain valuable industry experience!
