Carly McDonald
I completed my internship at The Wimmera Mail-Times newspaper in Horsham. I worked as a journalist researching and writing stories for the paper. I completed the internship over three weeks, which allowed me to get a realistic feel for the pressures and hardships that come with being a journalist.
I spoke to a wide range of people and wrote on a variety of topics, including foreign exchange students, a homestead debate, career expos, and Wimmera businesses who export their products overseas. The placement gave me a greater appreciation of the district and its residents and while there were some tough times along the way, the work was extremely satisfying (especially when I got my first front page story!)
By the end of the placement I had built a significant profile of work and felt much more confident in my abilities. The internship was a wonderful experience that allowed me to build on my skills, and also learn new skills that I will be able to put into practice when I enter the workforce.
