As an international student, I was under a lot of pressure at the start of the semester to find an internship that would be relevant. The Big West Festival was not my first choice, but it all worked out well, because I was able to utilise my skills where they were most needed.
My role as an intern with Big West Arts Festival, 2007 was to assist the marketing coordinator of the festival. My responsibilities included the distribution of collateral, market research during the event, and updating and evaluating the festival website (www.bigwest.com.au).
The people at Big West went out of their way to make me feel a part of the team and to make time to discuss any job related issues I may have had. They liked my work and even asked me to stay on and work for a month longer than I was supposed to. The internship was a good way for me to get an insight into work life in the Australian context. I have reaffirmed certain perceptions I had about my future career path, and have dispelled certain misconceptions I had about working in Australia. It is an experience that has helped me grow as an individual and I hope will leverage my career prospects. The internship has made me seriously consider coming back to work in Australia. I will definitely cherish the memories and keep in touch with the friends I have made at Big West.
