Student & Graduate Profiles

Samantha Castro

As part of my course I completed an Internship as a Communication Officer at Make Poverty History and worked on their 2008 Climate Change and STAND UP campaigns.

I had already worked in corporate and commercial media before returning to study, but this internship offered me the opportunity to experience a communication role in the humanitarian and not-for-profit sector.

The internship gave me insight into how such agencies coordinate their campaigning, while also enabling me to use my communication skills to help facilitate particular events. It also was inspiring to see so many individuals passionate and dedicated to what they do despite enormous obstacles.

I would highly recommend this subject to anyone who wants to get a feel for a future career move and for me it confirmed there is no going back to making McDonald’s commercials, when there are so many opportunities to contribute to solving the world’s problems.

Thank you Deakin and thank you Make Poverty History.
