In November 2008 I received word from Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide-Jakarta that I was invited to take part in their internship program. Ogilvy PR under the WPP umbrella, is one of the world's largest communications services agencies. Achieving an internship position at such a prominent company was extremely exciting.
I entered the program in 15 December 2008. I met my mentor who seemed fantastic. She had created a motivating list of tasks and assignments that I would complete during the internship. These included working with a media monitoring team, and working on several projects including helping Account Executives in developing public relations plan and strategy and press materials.
My co-op experience had been amazing, I was lucky to be involved in so many aspects of the day to day operations. The methods I have learnt in the classroom have gone hand in hand with things I learnt on the job, which has helped me apply my knowledge in both areas. The work experience will also help build an excellent resume (including relevant work experience) for when I was out of the classroom and searching for a job. Looking back upon my internship with Ogilvy PR, I have no doubt that it has provided me with the confidence, experience, and connections I will need to accomplish my post-graduation goals.
After undertaking the internship, I have now also finished off my Masters of Professional Communication (Public Relations) at Deakin University. The internship portion of my degree at Deakin University has been a priceless opportunity that will certainly help me post-graduation. I would recommend students to take the opportunity and do a co-op or internship experience prior to searching for a job.-Shirley T.
