About the 2012 Study Tour
The Visual Communication Design study tour to Japan took place in November/December 2012.
The study tour was open to all Arts students completing units in Visual Communication Design. Places are limited, and if necessary preference will be given to students majoring in Visual Communication Design and Animation, although other creative arts applicants will be considered.
The Visual Communication Design study tour will travel with the Animation study tour in 2012, as they cover similar areas of interest. In addition to this there is a focus on areas of visual communication such as packaging, unique Japanese paper stocks and paper making techniques, Japanese iconography and symbols, traditional and contemporary patterns.
The purpose of the tour is to give students in their 2nd or 3rd year at Deakin University the opportunity to visit places of interest specific to Japanese contemporary culture and to experience Japan's unique mix of traditional and cutting edge approaches to visual culture and technology.
The tour will visit areas of interest in different districts of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. These include the Japan Graphic Design Association, galleries including graphic design specific exhibitions, shopping areas and museums.
A special feature of the 2012 study tour will be the opportunity to meet and work with faculty and students from partner institutions in Japan. A two day intensive workshop was hosted by Kyoto University of Art & Design in the 2011 study tour allowing Deakin University and KUAD students to work together on a project that will be exhibited in Phoenix Gallery in March 2012. We are in the process of organizing a similar experience for the 2012 study tour.
All students must enroll in either of the following units in Trimester 3 2012 to participate in the tour
Both are credit-bearing (1credit point) units and involve assessment.
