How was Manankurra
used by the Yanyuwa and Others?
Manankurra is the
biggest of the big places in this area. Here the Yanyuwa and the Garrwa
and other groups from farther away used to meet before Europeans arrived
and for many decades afterwards. There are no roads into this place
and little pastoral activity because of its remoteness.
It is rich in food
- the palms, pandanus nuts, and food available in the river (turtles,
dugongs and fish)
Many ceremonies
were performed here by large groups of people on a seasonal basis until
the 1950s.
People did not settle
here permanently until after the salt-mine was established on a permanent
basis.
