Academic Appeals Committee
An ad hoc committee of Academic Board constituted and conducted in accordance with the terms of reference set down by the Academic Board to hear academic appeals pursuant to this regulation.
Academic year
The period from the first day of the first semester of any year to the day preceding the first day of the first semester of the following year (inclusive).
Assessment
An evaluation, by whatever means a faculty board has determined, of a student's academic performance in each of the tasks, which may include examination, prescribed for a unit
Collusion
When a student obtains the agreement of another person for a fraudulent purpose with intent to obtain an advantage in submitting an assignment or other work.
Course
A program of study approved by a faculty board and accredited by the Academic Board consisting of a set of units comprising credit points to a particular value, which when successfully completed qualifies a student for a higher education award of the University. Specific course rules and admission requirements will be published annually in the University Handbook or by other appropriate means approved by the Academic Board
Deferral
The approved postponement of study for a specified period prior to the first enrolment in a course.
Exclusion
The termination by the University of a student's enrolment in a course for a specified period with no right to apply for readmission for a minimum period of one academic year.
Faculty Academic Progress and Discipline Committee (FAPDC)
A committee of each faculty, established by the faculty board of each faculty, for dealing with such matters of academic progress and academic misconduct as are referred to it under University regulations.
Intermission
Aan approved suspension of study for a specified period; usually a maximum of one year after a student has enrolled in a course.
Pass conceded
A grade that may be awarded for one unit in any course to enable a student to satisfy the requirements of the course in which they are enrolled, provided that the student has achieved a minimum of 40% in the unit and satisfied any other requirements as specified by the faculty board.
Plagiarism
When a person passes off as their own work, or copies without acknowledgement of its authorship, the work of any other person.
Restriction
A guideline set by the Faculty Academic Progress committee on students prescribed enrolment.
Result
The final grade/mark in a unit awarded to a student based on the summation of assessment for that unit;
Semester
A teaching period (excluding breaks and holidays), the commencement and completion of which are specified and published annually in the University Handbook. For the purposes of this regulation "semester" is used to describe 'semester one' or 'semester two' or 'summer semester' studies.
Show Cause
To appear before the Faculty Academic Progress and Discipline committee either in person or in writing against a proposed Restriction/Exclusion.
Unit
A defined element of a course having a discrete designated code and title in which students enrol and complete specific work requirements. A unit is normally a quarter of a semester's workload, and is normally of a semester duration and carries a specific credit value towards an award.
Unit chair
The person appointed by the head of school to be
responsible for coordinating the curriculum, teaching and assessment in a unit. Such person shall act as chair of the assessment panel for that unit.
