Student Progress Reports
The Faculty Academic Progress and Discipline Committee (FAPDC) is responsible for monitoring students' academic progress throughout their course of study. The University provides a report to the faculties of students whose progress is unsatisfactory and the FAPDC sends letters to these students advising them of its intended action.
There are four types of letters you may receive from the FAPDC in relation to unsatisfactory progress. You must read them carefully and, if needed, respond to the Committee within the due date. The first two types of letters (exclusion and restriction) require a response. The second two types of letter (slow progress and first year warning) are warnings only. They are to inform you that you are at risk of unsatisfactory progress if your academic performance does not improve.
- Exclusion Letter
This letter requires action. It is to advise you that your academic progress over the past two active semesters has been unsatisfactory because: (1) you have failed a teaching practicum, (2) failed a core unit twice, (3) failed more units than you passed, or (4) failed to meet a restriction previously applied to your enrolment by the FAPDC.
The letter will contain a proposed exclusion on your enrolment and you must respond to the FAPDC to either:
- accept the exclusion, or
- show cause before the committee (in writing or in person) to explain why you believe you should not be excluded for a period of 12 months.
If you fail to respond within the prescribed period (within 10 days of the date on the letter), the exclusion will automatically take place.
- Restriction Letter
This letter requires action. It is to advise you that your academic progress over the past two active semesters has been unsatisfactory because: (1) the number of units you have passed is equal to the number you have failed units, or (2) you have failed a non-core unit twice.
The letter will contain a proposed restriction on your enrolment and you must respond to the FAPDC to either:
- accept the restriction, or
- show cause before the committee (in writing or in person) to explain why you believe you should not be restricted.
If you fail to respond within the prescribed period (within 10 days of the date on the letter), the restriction will automatically take place.
- Slow Progress
This letter is issued as a warning only. Do not reply to the FAPDC, but do contact an enrolment officer to discuss your progress to ensure you can complete your course within the prescribed time.
- First Year Warning
This letter is issued as a warning only. Do not reply to the FAPDC, but do seek advice and support from within or outside the university to improve your studies. Contact your Course Co-ordinator if you are finding the transition to university life difficult. There are many support services available to you through the university, as detailed on this site.
