Deakin's Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary)

Course Overview

The full-time, year-long Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary) is one of the Faculty's core pre-service teacher education programs. It prepares graduates for teaching in secondary schools and introduces students to a study of education which encourages research analysis and critique. These understandings, together with a minimum of 45 days professional experience, equip students for a wide range of educational employment. The teaching staff are all highly qualified and active in many aspects of school based teaching and learning. Many have international research reputations and work as advisors on a variety of aspects of education both locally and at the national level.

School Experience

All school experiences are purposeful, structured and provide opportunities to develop not only knowledge and understanding of the school curriculum, but also a greater understanding of how students learn.

Students have the opportunity to teach in independent, government and denominational schools in both city and country locales under the supervision of dedicated teachers - some of whom are Deakin graduates. There are also overseas teaching opportunities in BC Canada , Ghana West Africa, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia , New Delhi India , Vanuatu , as well as in the Northern Territory of Australia. The latter are counted as part of the 45 days supervised professional school experience.

For our Canadian students please note:

The course is equivalent to the 1yr B Ed program offered by Canadian universities and is recognised by the registration authorities in Ontario (O.C.T) and other Canadian provinces. At the end of successful completion of this course you will be eligible to register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
