Postgraduate Courses for Educators

Your career

Deakin’s postgraduate education courses have been developed for professional educators looking for courses that will offer excellent career prospects by advancing their qualifications and knowledge, and making them better teachers.

The pressure is on to ensure that Australia's teaching professionals have the skills to tackle the challenging and dynamic nature of education. Soon it may be the standard for all teachers to have a postgraduate qualification and continually upgrade their skills to ensure accreditation.

Our flexible and relevant areas of study allow specialist and generalist teachers to develop professional skills in their areas of interest, while the Master of Education degree may be the key you need to gain a principal or deputy principal position.

Course structure

The Graduate Certificate of Education comprises 4 credit points of study. The Master of Education comprises 8 credit points of study. Courses are constructed from a mix of generic and specialist units. If you wish to focus your study on a specific area of expertise, you can undertake studies in:

» Educational Leadership and Administration
» Professional Development*
» Special Educational/Needs
» Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages** (TESOL)
» Teaching Languages Other Than English*** (TLOTE)

Masters degrees also offer two pathways or study options:
» Coursework only pathway – you choose units to the value of 8 credit points. This allows you to tailor the course around your area of interest.
» Coursework and research paper pathway – this option involves undertaking 4 credit points of selected generic and specialist units together with 2 credit points of research methodology and a 2-credit point research paper in your specialist area. If you intend to undertake a higher degree by research (Doctoral studies) you will need to take this option.
Graduate certificates may be undertaken as an entry point or as an exit point after satisfactory completion of at least 4 credit points of study.

* Professional Development – for teachers undertaking professional development modules through the Victorian Professional Development network; available at Graduate Certificate of Education level only.
** Teaching Languages Other Than English (TLOTE) option available.
*** Teaching Languages Other Than English (TLOTE) – available at the Master of Education level only
.

Entry requirements

Applicants for the Graduate Certificate of Education should hold an approved three-year degree or diploma with a teaching qualification or teaching experience. Applicants with a different academic background will be advised of alternative course choices such as Professional Education and Training.
You will be offered a place in the Deakin Master of Education if you have four years of tertiary study including an approved teaching qualification, or four years of tertiary study plus three years of teaching experience. Special Entry is also available and assessed at the time of application

Advanced standing (credit transfer)

You may apply for advanced standing if you believe your qualifications exceed the normal minimum requirement for admission.

Investment

A postgraduate course in education is an investment in your career. Graduate certificate courses are only offered on a fee-paying basis. Masters courses are usually full‑fee‑paying, however Deakin University offers a limited number of Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). If you are initially allocated a fee-paying position, you may still be eligible for a CSP later in the course.
These CSP allocations will be offered on the basis of your performance in the first four units of study.
Australian citizens and some permanent residents enrolled in the program can access an interest free loan to cover their tuition fees through FEE-HELP. Further details regarding FEE‑HELP are available at www.goingtouni.gov.au. For current information on fees please visit www.deakin.edu.au/fees.

Course duration

All courses are offered off campus by part-time or full-time study. Students enrolled in TESOL, TLOTE or the MEd E700 course may choose to study on campus at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood or off campus. The Master of Education is normally completed in four or five semesters of part-time study or the full-time equivalent. The graduate certificate course is normally completed in two semesters of part-time study.
