Course structure

The Master of Education program, offered through the HCT/DU partnership, is based on the Faculty's MEd flagship Generic Units, developed from the ground up for flexible delivery including on-line, web-based components as well as contemporary print-based materials. A feature of these Generic Units is their inclusion of web-based case studies of international educational practice, which is supported by the modern, high quality facilities of the Higher Colleges, including the latest in information and communication technologies ideally suited to supporting the flexible delivery of Deakin's Master of Education.

The partnership between Deakin and HCT includes provision for teaching-related research aimed at enhancing local 'in-country' content in the form of case studies of educational issues and practices in the UAE. This will foster research (as well as teaching) links between the two institutions.

The Master of Education course offered through the Deakin/HCT partnership is conducted at both Abu Dhabi Women's College and Dubai Women's College, with on-campus support in the form of 20 hours of face-to-face study intensives presented by Deakin academic staff and backed up with on-going tutorial support by local tutors and the on-line Deakin Studies Online websites for each of the eight units making up the MEd.

Students studying the Deakin MEd through the Deakin/HCT partnership study at a rate that suits their personal and professional circumstances, undertaking either one, two or three units per semester. It is possible for most students to study at a rate that enables them to complete the requirements for the award of Master of Education within two years, though accelerated progress is also supported, especially for those students who wish to study full-time on-campus within Australia for one semester.

Upon graduation, students receive an M Ed award from Deakin University as well as a certificate awarded by the Higher Colleges of Technology.

It is anticipated that this partnership will provide a base from which Deakin University and the Higher Colleges of Education will expand their professional collaboration in the future through a process of joint research-based teaching that enables the resulting Masters program to be respectful of and informed by the cultures of both countries, thus contributing to Deakin's and Victoria's interests in progressive and inclusive educational practices.

Generic units

The HCT/DU Masters program is based on the 'generic' units listed below which have been developed as part of a major recent redesign of the Deakin Masters programs. They focus on contemporary educational issues which can be applied to any specialist study and to a variety of professional contexts internationally and are designed to be compatible with on-line technologies.
