As you may be aware an African Music Mailing list for Melbourne (Australia) has been established to promote discussion and interchanges of ideas, experiences and resources on the teaching and learning of African music at both primary and secondary school levels. The African MAT Cell for Australia (Pan-African Society for Musical Arts Education -- PASMAE)
Approval was given at the PASMAE Conference held in Kisumu, Kenya (July 6-11) for the formation of an African MAT (Musical-Arts Action Team) cell for Australia headed by Dr Dawn Joseph (Deakin University, Melbourne). This MAT cell, the only such group to be formed so far outside of the African continent, will be involved in promoting and documenting the use of African music in Australian schools and will also be involved in research and development activities including curriculum design and development projects.
