on Music and Identity

About SSARN

The 'Music and Identity' project emerged from workshops conducted by the Travelling Institute for Music Research (TIMR) and has been developed with the support for the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) in cojunction with the the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) .  The first stepts were taken with the formation of the Swedish-South African  Research Network (SSARN), which applied for and received a grant from the 'SIDA/NRF bi-lateral research program' to organise its activities for 2004-2006.

The aim of the project is, through a series of seminars, to produce a book on Music and Identity. The procedure was based on meetings between international scholars in a format that facilitates deeper long-term scholarly co-operation. A salient feature of the project is a mutual exchange of ideas entailing rethinking of theories, interpretation of research material, and production of written materials. Membership of the project consists principally of a group of researchers from Sweden ( Scandinavia ) and South Africa ( Africa ), although there were members from other countries including Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Australia and the United States of America. Many scholars, through their contributions, formed the basis of a preliminary thematic foundation established during the course of four seminars held betweeb 2002 and 2005.
