| Research interests |
Russell Tytler convenes the very active STEME research group. He has been involved over many years with system wide curriculum development and professional development initiatives. He was principal researcher for the School Innovation in Science project which developed a framework for describing effective science teaching, and a strategy for supporting school and teacher change. That work has been influential more widely in Victoria and nationally. He has researched and written extensively on student learning in science, and science investigations. His recent research interests include student reasoning in science, learning and literacy in science, public understanding of science, teacher and school change, and curriculum policy and development. He has strong international links, having held visiting professor positions in Europe and Asia. He is currently involved in a number of teacher and school change initiatives, including the linking of school and community in introducing more authentic and contemporary science into the curriculum. His recent call for a ‘re-imagining’ of science education has been influential on curriculum policy in Australia.
