| Research interests | I have worked and researched the area of ‘new literacies/technologies’ and more broadly towards increasing networks and partnerships between universities, schools and communities for the last 15 years and this work has resulted in numerous publications in journals and edited commercial books. Most significantly my PhD thesis entitled “Re-conceptualising visual literacy: A post-Literacy approach” looked at the changing generational understanding of children with regards to visual and mediated realities. In my thesis I used the theorist Jean Baudrillard’s concepts of simulacra, hyperreality and seduction to argue that children’s worlds today are more complex than in the past and that schools are not well equipped to deal with these complexities. My research has been in rural and regional school and university contexts where the focus has been on helping develop skills for the 21st Century in these communities. High on my list of priorities are notions of social capital, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in order to better equip students to not only work in regional communities but to enhance the communities they live in by actively engaging with and enhancing the social and cultural capital of the local environment. | |
