Talking Across Cultures: An International Collablorative Study of Student's Mathematical Explanations

This project will investigate Grade 1 children's mathematical explanations during the whole-class discussion phase of mathematics lessons in Australia, Hungary and Japan. We will not only describe and compare children's explanations, but also develop a theoretical framework, or tool, for analysing these, which can be used by teachers to reflect on the levels of explanations offered by children in their own classrooms. The project is intended as the pilot phase for a continuing program of international collaborative research.

The aim of this study is to investigate the nature and level of Grade 1 children's mathematical explanations during the whole-class discussion phase of mathematics lessons in order to develop a theoretical framework, or tool, for analysing these.
