Financial Assistance

Studying overseas doesn't need to break the bank. You could be eligible for financial assistance, to help with the cost of travel, accommodation and program costs.

The Faculty of Arts and Education offers a number of travel grants to assist students with the cost of overseas course-related travel.

If you hold a Commonwealth Support Place in your course at Deakin, you could also consider an OS-HELP Loan. Further eligibility criteria applies. See link below.

Travel Grants in Arts and Education

Travel Grants are available for the following Faculty of Arts and Education programs:

  • In Country Language Programs (Arabic, Indonesian and Chinese)
  • Global Experience Programs
  • Bachelor of International Studies Internships - only for placements outside of Australia
  • Study Tours
  • Miscellaneous/other Work Integrated Learning or international activities not covered in one of the other grant options.

Before you apply for a Travel Grants you should:

a. Have been offered a place in a student mobility program in the Faculty of Arts and Education. Applications will not be accepted until you have been formally offered a place in a program and enrolled.

b. Be enrolled as a student in a Faculty of Arts and Education course.

c. Meet the eligibility criteria detailed for the travel grant you are applying for. See categories below for criteria and link to application form.

Bachelor of International Studies Internship Travel Grants

Available for students completing either AIS330/AIS331 International Internship A/B as part of one of the following courses:

  • Bachelor of International Studies A326
  • Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of International Studies D323
  • Bachelor of International Studies/Bachelor of Commerce D338

Preference will be given to those applicants for whom this will be their first international experience.

Grants are to the value of $1000 per student.

Selection criteria includes:

  • Academic merit ie WAM/Weighted Average Mark
  • Personal statement outlining your reasons (personal, professional and academic), for undertaking this international experience. 
  • Willingness to assist in promotional activities for prospective students after your return from your program. eg: student profiles, information sessions, presentations.

Apply for a Travel Grant

In-Country Language Program Travel Grants

In-Country Language Program Travel Grants are for students participating in one of the following 2015 programs:

  • Chinese In-Country Language Program
  • Indonesia In-Country Language Program

Grants will be to the value of $500 to $1000 per student.

Eligibility:

Applicants must meet all of the below criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen or holder of an Australian permanent visa, or an international student on a program that is held in a country other than their country of origin.
  • Must be enrolled in a Faculty of Arts and Education course
  • Be completing a major in the language of the the In-Country Program.
  • Applicants for whom and language of the In-Country Program is their native language will be ineligible.

  • Personal statement outlining your reasons (personal, professional and academic), for undertaking this international experience. 
  • Willingness to assist in promotional activities for prospective students after your return from your program. eg: student profiles, information sessions, presentations.

Study Tour Travel Grants

Study Tour Travel Grants are for students who are participating in a Faculty of Arts and Education Study Tour in 2015. Travel Grants will be a maximum of $500 per student.

These programs are:

  • America and the International System AIR292
  • Buddhist Studies in India ASP263
  • Middle East Studies AIE365
  • Visual Design & Animation ACG308
  • Japanese Politics, Society and Culture AIS203 - only for students who do not receive Asia-Bound Scholarships.
  • Communication Management in Asia ALR311- only for students who do not receive Asia-Bound Scholarships.

Students should only apply for a Study Tour Travel Grant once they have been accepted into a Trimester 3 2015 program and been advised to enrol in their unit on StudentConnect.

Applications close approximately two months prior to program departure. Deadlines to be published shortly.

  • must be be an Australian citizen, or holder of an Australia permanent visa, or an international student on a program that is held in a country other than their country of origin. 
  • enrolled in a Faculty of Arts and Education course
  • Must not have received another grant for their international program from Deakin University, such as a Global Mobility Travel Grant, Asia-Bound Scholarship or WIL Support Bursary.

Selection criteria includes:

  • Academic merit ie WAM/Weighted Average Mark
  • Personal statement outlining your reasons (personal, professional and academic), for undertaking this international experience. 
  • Willingness to assist in promotional activities for prospective students after your return from your program. eg: student profiles, information sessions, presentations.

Priority will be given to applicants who:

  • are in receipt of a Centrelink benefit (Austudy, Newstart Allowance etc)
  • and/or can demonstrate this program will be their first international experience.

Apply for a Travel Grant

Miscellaneous/other activities Travel Grants

These travel grants are for students who are undertaking Work Integrated Learning or international activities, which are contributing as credit towards their Deakin course.

Including, but not limited to:
  • an internship taking place outside of Victoria, or outside of Australia. Internship must be crediting towards your course.
  • Study Abroad/Exchange program. Students who have received a travel grant from Global Mobility of $1000 or more are not eligible for a Miscellaneous Travel Grant.

Grants will be to the value of $500 to $1000 per student.

Students can apply for a Miscellaneous Travel Grant only once their experience is appearing StudentConnect.

Eligibility criteria:

  • must be be an Australian citizen, or holder of an Australia permanent visa, or an international student on a program that is held in a country other than their country of origin. 
  • enrolled in a Faculty of Arts and Education course
  • Must not have received another grant for their program from Deakin University, such as a Global Mobility Travel Grant, Asia-Bound Scholarship or WIL Support Bursary.
