Why do an Arts course?

Why do an Arts degree? As a future student we know that you want to ensure that you choose a course that you will enjoy and have an interest in, but also one that will lead you to a rewarding and fulfilling career. Sometimes choosing an Arts course can meet with a lack of understanding of exactly where an Arts degree can lead and what an Arts course means in the 21st century?

The work force of the 21st century is global. Arts disciplines provide the understanding and cultural sensitivity necessary to be competitive and relevant, both nationally and internationally. And it is Arts disciplines that provide a foundation for lifelong, independent learning.

A recent study by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia noted that 'within four month of completing Arts/Humanities and related courses, more than 70% of graduates are in full time employment and a further 25% are undertaking further study'.

An Arts degree can give you many marketable and transferable skills in research, analysis, lateral thinking, writing and communication. You will also develop knowledge specific to the disciplines of your choice and your studies will teach you to be a good team member, manage your time effectively, help you to make decisions and finesse your presentation skills, while also providing you with the skills and knowledge to think logically and with accuracy.

A Deakin University Arts degree offers programs across the humanities and social sciences, communication and media and the disciplines of the creative industries.

We at Deakin aim to give students, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, an intellectually exciting education, anchored in core disciplines, and developing the professional and vocational skills that are essential in the workplace of the 21st century. Students are given many opportunities to undertake work placements and internships and to experience international exchange.

Programs can be taken on campus in Melbourne (Burwood), Geelong and Warrnambool or off campus anywhere in Australia or the world. The Faculty has a long-standing reputation for excellence in distance education, now enhanced by online delivery. Flexible delivery is particularly relevant to our postgraduate coursework programs which offer professional education at a time and location of the students' choosing.

Increasingly, students are also finding an Arts degree combined with another degree, an exciting means of adding to their mix of skills to offer employers.

An Arts degree provides skills for a wide range of careers. Graduates may find careers in international relations, journalism, professional writing, advertising, media, photography, multimedia, public relations, sales, personnel and industrial relations, government, administration, policy development, performing arts and many, many more industries.
