Itinerary for the two weeks

Friday 17 July

Session 18: Final presentations and Graduation Dinner – all involved in the Study Tour
The final presentations were completed in the lecture theatre, and went very well. Most interesting to see the video about studying in Australia, the photo slideshow and each group’s ideas on what they had learned.

Then there was a special dinner – not the same beautiful food as in Bangalore, but very enjoyable!

After the dinner, the graduation ceremony was conducted by Professor Jennifer Radbourne, the Dean of Arts/Education at Deakin University. Special presentations were made to all the students in the Study Tour, who successfully completed the Creative and Commercial Entrepreneurship course. A speech indicating the pleasure of this joint initiative preceded special presentations to the Jyoti Nivas College staff who have made this tour so successful, warm and exciting.

Session 17: Field Trip – Cultural Tour – teachers from JNC, Ruth Rentschler

This was a full day cultural tour. It started at the aquarium - with sharks ready to pounce - no-one seemed to want to swim with them! Then there was a special address by the chief executive officer of Multicultural Arts Victoria, with lunch afterwards at Brunswick St Fitzroy, a very cultural area. After lunch the students and staff went to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and National Gallery of Victoria, where they were addressed by key marketing and curating people. ACMI is a Very interesting museum focusing on the film industry in Australia – not like Bollywood! And the art gallery had lots of aboriginal artwork, as well as early twentieth century Australian painters.

Session 16: Museum in the morning, Recording in TV Studio - teachers Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott, Luke Raisbeck

This was it, the big day!!
First of all there was a visit to the Museum, to see the Pompei Exhibition. Professor Ruth Rentschler went with the students.

Then there was the really busy afternoon in the TV studio. Each group did a live show, straight through without stopping. We needed an audience to clap, but in a TV studio there is not much room…
Now the students just need to concentrate on preparing their final oral presentations before the dinner on Friday. That will be a big occasion, when everyone will dress very formally and the video material will be demonstrated.

Tuesday 14 July

Session 14: Presentation Skills – teacher Karen Le Rossignol
This session was in a computer room again, so that everyone could finalise their presentations. When all presentations are complete, the students will receive a Deakin University Certificate at the Graduation on 17 July. The Chair in Arts and Entertainment Management, Ruth Rentschler, provided a series of case studies on Creativity in Marketing – a very useful session!

Session 15: Rehearsal in TV Studio – teachers Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott, Luke Raisbeck
This was a lot of fun, with the three project groups finalising their 4 minute video show to be recorded tomorrow. Each group rehearsed in the TV studio, working out the technical as well as the performance details. Although this took two hours, the time passed so fast! Each person took turns in doing the camera, floor manager and other technical roles… it will be exciting doing the filming on Wednesday!

Monday 13 July

Session 12: Strategic Leadership – teacher Karen Le Rossignol
This session looked at how leaders can develop entrepreneurial projects, and manage groups of people with very different skills.
Two Indian students who had studied Postgraduate Masters courses at Deakin also spoke to the group – Pallavi Rao and Abi Francis, who studied Master of Communication/Master of Arts Event Management and Master of Arts Writing and Literature.

Session 13: Project Management – teacher Karen Le Rossignol
One of the major outcomes of this Study Tour is the development of clear organisational paperwork, such as the Project Action Plan and Marketing Plan for each group. These have been finalised and posted on the Deakin Studies Online website for all the groups to share.
The students are also assisting in a research project, completing interviews with Deakin staff about their expectations for education in a globalised approach. The interviews are being conducted on Monday and Tuesday.

Saturday 11 July

Session 10: Healesville Sanctuary – Anne Roubin, two postgraduate students
After leaving on the bus from Deakin University at about 10am, the students and staff travelled with Anne Roubin and the postgraduate students from Deakin, to Healesville Sanctuary, about an hour away. The Sanctuary is a natural habitat type of zoo, with only Australian animals wandering through specially constructed enclosures shaped like their own environments.

Session 11: Phillip Island
This is a further 1.5 hours away, travelling ‘overseas’ to the island in Westernport Bay. Travelling along the rocky and wild southern coast and past wonderful surf beaches facing towards Antarctica (the water is as cold as that!), the students and staff explored the seals at Seal Rocks and then sat on the beach at sunset to wait for the little fairy penguins as they struggled up to their burrows to feed their babies. They are very cute, even though it is unbelievably cold! Hard to believe they swim for up to 3 days to find enough fish for their babies…
Then the long trip back home, on a lovely warm bus! …a very long day (about 200km of travel)!

Friday 10 July

Session 8: Photography workshop - teacher Torika Bolatagici This was a very useful session involving practice in using single lens reflex digital cameras, to develop the photography essay. There was also some work on downloading and working with the files, in the photography lab. The photos will be part of a slideshow, with music background. Photos from 10 July workshop

Session 9: Field trip to Melbourne city – teachers Callum Scott, Angela Osborne
This was a rather exhausting session visiting the central business district of Melbourne. The students travelled in by tram (approximately 45 minute trip) and went to see Federation Square, the old shopping arcades and colonial buildings, Melbourne Central and other interesting buildings in the centre of Melbourne. All the time everyone was taking photos for the projects…
These photos will be part of a special photo essay shown at the dinner on 17 July!! Photos from 10 July field trip

Thursday 9 July

Session 6: Writing – teachers Patrick van der Werp, Callum Scott
This session talked about structuring stories, developing storyboards and scripts for the projects ready to shoot them in the following week.

Session 7: Concept pitch presentation – teachers Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott
Students developed their concepts and planning ready to pitch their ideas to their clients, the teachers. Each group presented a short oral presentation, was given feedback by the clients/teachers and started to finalise the scripts for the final filming next week. It’s starting to get exciting to think about going into the TV studio and doing the whole show!

The students are developing their group projects for production next week in the TV studio - they are also enjoying using the computers to send messages and post up their photos!

Wednesday 8 July

Session 4: Motion Capture Studio – teacher Daniel Skovli
This session is a demonstration of how the Motion Capture studio works, both with a volunteer and with some activities of the students. This is a major audiovisual technology, used for advanced film animation.

The Motion Capture session was also very exciting with Helene from Deakin demonstrating how to dance in the special suit, then being transformed into a gremlin by the computer system! Two of the girls joined her to demonstrate Indian dancing... we're hoping to show this film as animation at the graduation ceremony on Friday 17th July.

Session 5: Marketing – teacher Callum Scott
Marketing includes a consideration of promotion and public relations, and detail on how it is possible to promote or market such products as the video and photography stories.

Tuesday 7 July

Session 2: Concept development – teachers Adrian Bruch, Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott
This was an interesting session held in the interactive media studio, which is a special open space set up to develop group discussion and creative approaches to projects. The students started with exercises to help them use left-right brain theory, then creatively explored the themes and concepts involved in their projects. After a break for a chai tea, they established three themes for their projects: developing independence by studying overseas, different ways of learning, and the space and place of Melbourne.

Session 3: Project management – teachers Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott
This session helped to develop the planning and structure of the three projects. The projects and their teams are:
  • Study Abroad – Kavyashree, Kanika, Madhu Shree, Gouthami
  • Study Tour experience – Surana, Nausheen, Anamika
  • Perceptions of Melbourne – Nikila, Syeda, Roopashri

The groups will each produce: a 2-3 minute video story (including weather segment!), a 20-30 photo essay, Action Plan and Marketing Plan, and oral presentation of their group’s purpose and outcomes, prior to the final dinner. These will form the assessment for successful completion of the Creative and Commercial Entrepreneurship Deakin University certificate.

Monday 6 July

Friday night, the bus arrived at our Burwood campus with our visitors from Bangalore.  The homestay families were anxiously awaiting them and took charge of their allocated students and set off home to have the girls rest and settle into their new home for the next two weeks.

Monday morning at 9am, and the girls were given orientation material and Melbourne information by Anne Roubin, the logistics coordinator. They also met some of the staff involved in the program: Karen Le Rossignol, Callum Scott, Angela Osbourne. One of the postgraduate students who is helping with organisation, Singgih Kertanegara from Indonesia, explained his internship role and looked forward to talking to the students on next Saturday’s excursion.

After a tour of the campus, they met with the Dean of Arts and Education, Dr Gary Smith, the Arts and Education International Development Manager Mike Knopp and other officials of the faculty and enjoyed a morning tea welcoming their arrival. The orientation finished with a detailed tour of the Deakin Library.

Session 1: Working in Teams. Karen Le Rossignol and Callum Scott introduced students to the Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire, and established three project teams. These teams will produce a short video and photographic essay, by the end of the Study Tour.
