Internships - home

Procedure

The following provides a step-by-step procedure for completing an internship (see separate advice for the Bachelor of International Studies).:

  1. The student begins to think about the type of internship they would like to undertake, taking into consideration details such as the time-frame of the placement, whether it will be in Australia or overseas, and possible host organisations which are based on personal interests and/or career goals.

  2. The student makes contact and/or meets with the Experiential Learning Officer (ELO) and relevant Unit Chair well in advance (at least six months for off-shore placements) to discuss plans for the proposed internship.

  3. The student approaches possible host organisations, and once a suitable placement has been determined the internship is negotiated and secured.

  4. The student obtains a confirmation from the host organisation which includes the following:

    • location and duration of the internship;
    • tasks and duties the student will be undertaking; and
    • contact details of the person supervising the student.

  5. The student completes the online application, which is submitted to the ELO.

  6. The ELO determies eligibility, seeks approval from the relevant Unit Chair and advises the student they can enrol in the internship unit via StudentConnect.

  7. The ELO sends a formal internship agreement to the host supervisor for signing.

  8. The student meets with the Unit Chair to discuss the academic component of the internship, including assessment and dates for submission.

  9. For off-shore placements, the student ensures the validity of their passport, arranges any required visas, undertakes a pre-departure medical and dental check-up, and has any required vaccinations.

  10. The student submits an online registration to receive comprehensive travel insurance at no cost, and provides the ELO with:

    • confirmation of travel insurance;
    • a full flight itinerary; and
    • an in-country contact phone number in case of emergency.

  11. The student advises Centrelink of travel dates (if in receipt of benefits such as AusStudy).

  12. The student completes the internship and submits all assessment criteria to the Unit Chair.

  13. Upon completion of the internship the student meets with the Unit Chair to debrief their internship experience and provides the ELO with both the Host and Student Evaluations.
