AusAid- Summer Vacation Employment and AusAid Internship Program

Summer Employment
AusAID's Summer Vacation Employment Program is an annual employment program aimed at providing employment to university students from the beginning of December to the end of February. This program is for students who are currently studying towards a bachelor degree or higher and are continuing studies in the following year. The work students are asked to perform ranges from general administrative duties to specific project support.
Internship Program
AusAID participates in the Australian National Internships Program administered by the Australian National University. The internship allows individuals studying development-related fields to undertake projects in AusAID as part of their study program. Australian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (the International Movement) with millions of members and volunteers operating in over 186 countries. The mission of the movement is to prevent or reduce human suffering, wherever it is found.  The Australian Red Cross deploys volunteers to Asia, the Pacific and Africa.

(Formally: Volunteering for International Development from Australia (VIDA) )
Australian Volunteers (formally VIDA) is funded by AusAID, and managed by Austraining. The organisation places skilled volunteers in long term assignments as part of Australia's overseas aid program. Applicants must be an Australian citizen or permanent Australian resident.

Australian Volunteers Internationalwww.australianvolunteers.com
AVI is a long-running volunteer agency that manages projects on behalf of AusAID. It runs a variety of programs in many different regions.

Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) www.ayad.com.au
The AYAD program is managed by Austraining on behalf of AusAID. The program aims to place 18-30 year olds on short-term assignments in developing nations across the Asia-Pacific region, and Africa. Applicants must be between 18 - 30 years old.

Casas de la Esperanza, Nicaragua http://www.casas-de-la-esperanza.org/
Casas de la Esperanza, La Esperanza Housing & Development (EH&D) is a non denominational, non political NGO. It develops housing and provides technical education to families who are currently squatters, living on the outskirts of Granada, Nicaragua. EH&D is also helping these families with volunteer's assistance for sustainable development through direct support, courses and technical education, small business and cooperatives, thereby increasing their expectation of a better future.

HFHK is a non-profit, child protection organisation based in Nepal and Australia that aims to protect and care for orphaned, abandoned and at-risk Nepalese children.

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) www.ifad.org
IFAD is a United Nations agency with the goal to empower poor rural people in developing countries to achieve higher incomes and improved food security. IFAD offers internships to young university students and graduates. Interns are fully involved in the work program of their division under the supervision of a staff member and may have a chance to visit IFAD-funded projects. Internships are for up to six months.
Location: Head office in Rome, Italy, but possibility of visiting projects in other countries.

L.I.F.E Agentina www.lifeargentina.org
L.I.F.E Argentina is a non-profit, civil society organisation that works with socially marginalised and impoverished Argentinean youth. The minimum time commitment is 35 hours per week for two months.

The Lasallian Foundation supports projects throughout the Asia Pacific region that provide poor and disadvantaged children an opportunity to break the poverty cycle. The Foundation was established in 2004 by the De La Salle Brothers of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, to help meet the growing needs of poor children throughout the region.

Slum Rehabilitation Society, Mumbai, India http://www.srsindia.org/
Slum Rehabilitation Society (SRS) is an NGO with the distinction of being the first to start developing principles of slum rehabilitation well before current government policies were formulated. Since 1972, SRS has been a key facilitator in Slum Rehabilitation Projects in Mumbai.

Spanda is a transnational non profit learning NGO for development and cooperation in the areas of culture, education, health and environment microfinance and research for the sustainable advancement of peace, knowledge and understanding. Spanda is particularly interested in projects that encourage freedom of inquiry, imagination, insight, creativity and expression. Spanda offers a very limited number of internships every year, however there are many ongoing less formal volunteer positions.

The Aziza Foundation- Aziza's Place

The Aziza Ghori Charitable Foundation is a US-registered not-for-profit (501.c.3) organization focused on providing educational and self-enriching opportunities in a safe and nurturing living environment for children in need. Timor Institute of Development Studies (TIDS)

Timor Institute of Development Studies (TIDS) was established in July 1997 as East Timor Study Group (ETSG) before changing to TIDS in January 2003. On December 5, 2003, TIDS was registered formally as a non-government institution for research and training. The objective of TIDS is to promote research and teaching in various development issues in East Timor. Core activities are research and training in three broad areas:

UNICEF is a large non-government organisation that focuses on alleviating the obstacles facing disadvantaged children and youth. UNICEF works in 190 countries through country programmes and National Committees.

World Food Program www.wfp.org
WFP is a United Nations agency mandated to combat global hunger. In emergencies, WFP delivers food to victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters. WFP offers internships for university students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies.
Location: WFP headquarters in Rome and at country offices.

World Health Organisation (WHO) www.who.int
This organisation works to promote rights for women, racial and economic justice, world disarmament, and peace. Applicants must be over 20 years old and be fluent in the working language of the office of assignment.

World Vision www.worldvision.com.au
World Vision is a large, not-for-profit, Christian organisation with offices all around the globe aiming to reduce poverty and it's causes. World Vision Australia only offers domestic internships, so, under exceptional circumstances, students may want to consider an internship working with Indigenous Australians, for example. Most other international World Vision offices do not accept international students as volunteers. However, an internship may be possible with WV New Zealand, Malaysia, Ireland, and Canada
