Communication is the growth industry of the modern age. Deakin communication and media courses offer the flexibility to develop the key skills and knowledge across the professional areas needed for successful careers in this rapidly changing global industry.

Within the Communication & Media area, the School offers the following disciplines:

Journalism

Journalism at Deakin provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to become a qualified journalist in the broadcast and print media. Students study mass media, ethical and legal issues, gain research skills, workplace experience via internships, and learn methods and techniques of specialist writing for major dailies, country presses, mainstream magazines and broadcast journalism.

Journalism is offered as a major sequence in both the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communication), and as a sub-major in the Bachelor of Arts (Professional and Creative Writing).

Literary Studies

Studying literature at Deakin means engaging with literary texts in their contexts of production and reception, with a strong awareness of how the world of the text relates to the wider social and cultural world. We study literature ranging from ancient Greek drama, Shakespeare and other classics, to recent world fiction, poetry and film. There are opportunities for creative writing as well as critical analysis, and beyond the undergraduate sequence, a rich research culture with possibilities for further study at Honours and postgraduate levels.

Deakin has an excellent reputation for its units and courses in Children's Literature, which look to the needs of teachers and librarians as well as providing specialist knowledge to anyone interested in writing for children and young adults, and in the historical and cultural contexts in which such texts are produced.

Media and Communication

Media and Communication is the world's fastest growing industry and is an area of rapid and continuous technological, political, economic, and social change. Much of the recent explosion in the stock of human knowledge is linked with developments in media and communication. Students address issues and events in the industry at national and international levels through a combination of research, theory, analysis and practice.

Public Relations

Deakin University public relations courses are accredited by the Public Relations Institute of Australia. Graduates from Deakin University's public relations courses work in some of the most challenging communications roles in Australia. From political and government environments through to NGOs, the sporting world and the commercial sector every organisation needs to communicate - to deliver their message to their chosen audience. A Deakin PR degree equips you to do this. With a strong emphasis on work experience, via internships, your Deakin PR degree gives you skills in areas such as planning and management, communication theory, electronic and internet public relations and crisis management.
The Public Relations major can also be taken within the Bachelor of Arts.

Professional and Creative Writing

Professional Writing develops broadly based skills in the processes of writing and revision, providing expertise and practical experience across a range of genres, styles and professional environments. In all writing and editing units, the emphasis is on publication or the achievement of professional standards.
