Performing and Creative Arts

Deakin University's performing and creative arts take you on a journey to the leading edge of contemporary dance, drama, film, media, visual arts and visual communication design.

Creative and performing arts courses will develop your skills across a variety of techniques. Our courses have been developed in close consultation with industry and include a unique blend of theory and practice.

The School of Communication and Creative Arts offers the following disciplines in this area:

Animation and Motion Capture

Students have the opportunity to develop a moving image, graphic and animation practice in the expanding digital domain. These practices include time lapse, pixilation, 2D stop motion (hand drawn cut out,ink on glass, silhouette and cell camera animation) and their computergraphic animation equivalence (including virtual geometry, 3 D modeling and character rigging). Students also develop skill in motion graphics, effects and compositing across a range of genres.

Animation and Motion Capture is a specialist degree and is also offered as a major sequence in: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communication), Bachelor of Film and Digital Media.

Dance

Dance students receive contemporary dance training and develop their creative resources with skilled artist-practitioners. They develop critical, intellectual and academic skills through studies that place contemporary dance within dance history, cultures and society. Within the School they are encouraged to work collaboratively across the creative arts and to take advantage of possibilities for professional and international experience through internships, study tours and exchanges with overseas universities.

Drama

The growth of community based art events and performances requires artists to have a capacity to identify, and respond to, contemporary cultural issues, and to collaborate and liaise with community participants and artists from other disciplines. The Deakin Drama programs uniquely equip students to work successfully in a wide variety of Arts communities.

Film

The Film major provides students with a practical and theoretical grounding in the production and application of film, video and television. The sequence puts these media in the historical and social context of the institutions, technologies and artistic and personal forces from which they have emerged.

Photography

Photography is focused on creative, critical or professional practice, giving students the opportunity to develop their artistic, academic or professional aspirations.

Visual Arts

Deakin's visual arts program offers students the opportunity to develop their professional, academic and creative interests in the visual arts. With an emphasis on studio practice, study areas including: painting, drawing, artists books, graphic novels, visual narrative, art theory and interdisciplinary practices. The course strikes a balance between specialisation and diversification. This means students can combine their visual arts studies with other disciplines in strategic ways that allow a diversity of career pathways. The opportunity to also study visual arts at postgraduate level is offered through Honours, Masters, and PhD programs.

Visual Communication Design

Design students at Deakin University will consider the broader applications of graphic design and visual communication in a multi-faceted contemporary environment. Students will develop industry standard skills and knowledge through the application of hands on projects that are drawn from a variety of design problems. These will deal with publishing, identity, way finding, packaging, branding and the web.
