Role and profile Torika’s photographic and video work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, Aotearoa and Australia. She has published and presented at local and international conferences about contemporary visual culture, gender, identity and the Pacific.
Teaching responsibilities ACM101 Still Images (Unit Chair); ACM102 Comparative Imaging (Unit Chair);
Bachelor of Film and Digital Media - Photography major sequence. Torika is also available for Honours supervision.
Research interests - contemporary photographic practice and theory;
- gender and militarism in the Pacific;
- racial hybridity;
- hip-hop culture;
- identity;
- decolonisation;
- race, gender and representation;
- contemporary art of the Pacific.
Current research projects Torika's creative work and practice-led research exists at the intersection of art and politics as she tackles issues around gender, race, globalization and contemporary visual culture.
Torika is currently a doctoral candidate in the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics at the College of Fine Arts. Her PhD research titled ‘The Personal is Geopolitical’: Constructing the Fijian Military Body is concerned with ways in which the Fijian military body has been mythologised and constructed through colonial and neo-colonial visual representations, and explores Fijian agency and the role of ‘soldier photography’ in the co-construction of these myths.
