Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies

In line with international standards, the Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies programs offer an integrated approach to heritage conservation. These programs will enable you to demonstrate high level skills across a broad range of heritage and museum practices in your professional life.

They will also help you to develop an extensive, cross-disciplinary knowledge of industry related principles and practices and an awareness of community sensitivities. Both Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies programs are available at Deakin’s Melbourne (Burwood) campus and in off-campus mode.

Both programs produce graduates who are independent, innovative and creative thinkers; have a commitment to reflective practice in the heritage and museum sectors; have an understanding of international best practice standards; competently undertake a range of museological techniques; demonstrate ethical leadership; and have a commitment to continuous improvement.

Graduates in the past have found employment as practitioners in heritage institutions, museums, government agencies, private corporations, community organizations and in private practice. Typical job titles include: curator, heritage officer, collections manager, registrar, public programs officer, researcher and project officer.

The specialist teaching staff reflects the interdisciplinary nature of heritage practice, and each member has a strong connection with heritage practice both within Australia and abroad. Staff members are also active in researching tangible and intangible dimensions of heritage in Australia and internationally; and, in addition to teaching the coursework programs listed here, they supervise higher degree by research students studying for doctorates.
