Career Highlight Getting my first ever article published in The Age
My career history … ‘has been somewhat eclectic. I spent several years working in universities, including a stint in Washington DC as a Fulbright Scholar at Georgetown University. I switched careers to become a terrorism analyst with the Australian Government’s Office of National Assessments. I then took on a job as a journalist with The Age.’
Now … ‘I work for The Age. I love working in the Melbourne newsroom. It’s terrific to be surrounded by an inspiring bunch of journalists and becoming immersed in the daily production of the paper – hearing the scoops on sport, business and local political news.’
Deakin prepared me for … ‘a great career analysing world politics. I started out intending to major in journalism and literature and ended up focusing on international relations and psychology. The best thing about an Arts degree is the breadth of subjects available. You’re not locked into a particular discipline and over time, you gain an appreciation of how different areas relate to one another.’
Studying at Deakin gave me … ‘a chance to learn from fellow students just as much as from the lecturers and reading. This didn’t only happen in the classroom, but in student residences, at sports clubs and down at the pub. It’s all about networking!’
