| Role and profile |
A linguist by background, Xiangshu Fang’s main research interests now include ancient Chinese civilization, traditional Chinese educational practice and Chinese language teaching methodology. He has published four books. His first two books (both with Trevor Hay), East Wind, West Wind (1992), and Black Ice: A Story of Modern China (1997), reveal much of the political life in contemporary China. His third book, Confucian Primers in Dynastic China (2010), sheds some light on how generations of Chinese children were cultivated to value passivity, submissiveness, acceptance of fate and maintenance of the status quo. Supported by School Research Funds, he published The Rise of Ancient China (2011), which questions the conventional view about China’s past, be that of a Confucian, a Communist or a Western ethnocentric historiographer, points out an alternative view on formation and development of Chinese civilization, and offers a unique account of the process of periodic fragmentation and amalgamation of ancient China. Areas of Supervision: Any China-related research, including Chinese history, literature, arts, traditional culture, education and politics in general, and in particular: • The Chinese Cultural Revolution • Neo-Confucianism in China • Political and moral education in China • Ancient Chinese civilization |
