| Role and profile |
Dr Kate Fitz-Gibbon is a lecturer and researcher in Criminology at Deakin University. Kate researches in the area of the law’s response to lethal intimate partner violence and the effects of law reform in Australian and international jurisdictions. This research is undertaken with a key focus on gender and justice. Kate has published the findings of her research in high impact criminology, socio-legal and law journals and has presented at several national and international criminology conferences. Kate has advised on homicide law reform reviews in several Australian jurisdictions and has been sought for expert opinion on reforms to the law of provocation and defensive homicide by several media outlets and newspaper journalists. Kate's first book, 'A Second Chance for Justice: The Prosecutions of Gabe Watson for the Death of Tina Thomas' (co-authored with Dr. Asher Flynn, Monash University) critically examines the quest for justice in the double prosecution of David ‘Gabe’ Watson, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of criminal negligence for the death of his wife – Christina Thomas Watson - in Australia, and upon release from prison in Australia was tried and acquitted of her capital murder in Alabama. 'A Second Chance for Justice' was launched in February 2013 at the Victorian County Court by Mr David Galbally QC. The book's examination of justice in the Watson case as well as the implications of the rising price of justice in Australian and international jurisdictions has received much media interest including: • Live television interview on The ABC National Breakfast Show (Tuesday 26th February 2013), see: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-26/new-book-takes-a-closer-look-at-2003-honeymooon/4540344 • Radio interviews on the breakfast show with Phil K on Radio Australia and on The Conversation Hour with Jo Fain on ABC 774 (co-hosted by former Leader of the Democrats, Lynn Allison) see: http://www.abc.net.au/local/audio/2013/03/01/3701624.htm • Several news articles discussing the findings of the book.
