About Verandah

The first edition of the Verandah Literary Journal was launched in 1985, under the shade of the 'wide verandahs' of Victoria College. Established as a student-run publication, from its inception Verandah has attracted high quality works from both established and up and coming writers.

Verandah is Deakin University's annual literary journal. Each year, a new editorial team is chosen from the students studying the Professional Writing and Editing Degree, and their vision and philosophies are reflected in the journal. One thing that has remained constant over the years is the Verandah editors' commitment to producing a literary journal of the highest quality.

Verandah offers a range of prizes, in different categories, each year. Deakin Uni students are entered for free, but if you are not a Deakin student AND you would like your piece(s) to be in the running for a prize, entry fees apply. Full guidelines can be found on the submissions page.
