Verandah is a literary annual produced by Deakin University. If you cut it in
half, it'd have 23 rings. Past contributors have included Seamus Heaney, Les
Murray and Dorothy Porter.
But that doesn't mean just because you're an unpublished author, we're not
interested in what you have to say. While Verandah prides itself on providing a
damn fine read for its audience, it is also an avenue for emerging writers and
artists. We're more interested in results than resumes, and nothing would make
us prouder than being the first notch on your literary bedpost.
We will not be accepting submissions again until 2009.
Keep
an eye on this website for more details.
That doesn't mean we want your half-baked potboilers and poetic rants that have
spent the past five years in a bottom drawer. Can you remember a story or an
artwork that made your heart falter just shy of a proper beat? We know that
feeling, and it's the kind of thing we have a duty to present to our readers.
Each year we receive hundreds of submissions, and we want your piece to be heard
over the noise of the pack. Give us something that's braved the editing table a
few times. Give us something that sings.
We're five readers, artists and writers of varying palate, so
don't be afraid
that an idea or theme will be too this-or-that for us to appreciate. But I can
say, straight off the bat, that we do not accept previously published/
prizewinning pieces, gratuitous alliteration, wanton offensiveness, chapters of
a larger work (we can tell) and fan-fiction, unless it's a dark satire of
Joycean genius.
So rock our socks with the following:
Short stories: we would prefer between 350 - 2,000 words. Stories over 2,500
words will need to be proportionally brilliant to hold out two shorter stories.
Nothing over 3,000 words, please.
Poems: save your epics; poems/ suites of poems need to be fewer than 100 lines.
Scripts: under 5 - 7 minutes. That's 5 - 7 pages of properly formatted Courier
New, not 5 - 7 minutes of single-spaced monologue.
Non-fiction: traditionally Verandah has not carried much creative non-fiction.
Change our minds with insightful pieces that follow the short story limits.
Artwork and photography: we welcome both colour and black and white. Verandah is
slightly smaller than A4 sized, and we're seeking full, half and quarter page
submissions.
We accept submissions from February 1st, 2008 to June 1st, 2008. The deadline
for electronic submissions is midnight, June 1st 2008. Hard copy submissions
must be postmarked on or before June 1st, 2008.
Each year, Verandah offers a number of prizes for submissions, chosen and
awarded by our sponsors. The prizes are a mix of books and vouchers, and this
year we hope to include small cash prizes. Prize details will be posted on our
website towards the middle of the year. If this seems a little vague, remember
we are volunteers, Verandah is entirely non-profit and every red cent we collect
is ploughed back into producing the best damn lit journal we can craft.
All submissions must be accompanied by a $5 fee, or $10 for up to three
submissions, except for submissions by current Deakin students, which are free.
The submission fee represents your entry to our sponsor awards.
Please note that we will only accept the first three submissions from each
writer/ artist. Rest easy, poets; a suite of shorter poems counts as one
submission.
There are but two ways in life, and two ways to submit your work to Verandah.
Please ensure that all submissions are original work. Neither you nor I need the
copyright dramas.
