Verandah Club

Verandah Club is Deakin University's (Burwood) writing club, where you can meet, talk, swap, workshop and publish.

Writing is a solitary task, but it's the business and practise of writing which benefits and improves from group contact. Do you need people to workshop your writing, to inform you of competitions and opportunities? If so, this is Verandah Club's first priority. There is a toolbox of little secrets which we all carry around (whether we know it or not) and this is the environment in which we can learn from one another the tools of the writing trade.

Verandah Club is filled with opportunities to publish, connect, network, meet and share stories with prospects of editing. As of 2011, we have set up a private Facebook group dedicated to this cause as well as to plan club outings and events.

It is also a place which advertises various functions and events associated with the Melbourne Writer's Festival/ Emerging Writer's Festival and the greater writing community. It also provides a platform to become a Moderator on the website and/or help manage funding events for Verandah Club and Verandah Literary and Art Journal.

This is a great segue into being part of the Verandah Editorial team during your third year of your Creative Writing major. Or it may just be a way of gaining great experience, if you are interested in web and/or editing experience. Verandah supplies references for your CV if you decide to be part of the team.

The people forming Verandah Club are students just like you, but we are also responsible for Deakin's literary and art journal, Verandah. This means that sometimes we're going to be busier than a longtailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs!

Members of Verandah Club will receive updates on competitions, publishing opportunities and literary events. They will have access to workshopping groups and networking events.

In addition to the aforementioned Facebook group, Verandah Club also runs the DeScribe Forum, a deviantART group and a Writer's Cafe account for you to share your writing and talk to one another.

Joining fee is just $2. If you're a full Access Member at DUSA, they will match this joining fee. To become a DUSA Access Member you will need to sign up at DUSA, located in Building A on the Burwood Campus. It costs $20 for this membership and enables you to join other clubs of interest. Upon joining, you will be invited to our private Facebook group and recieve updates from us every once in a while in your inbox.
