Submission Guidelines and Deadlines

 

Verandah looks for and likes well-polished and previously unpublished works. Please refer to our Purchase page for back issues or our Samples page for the calibre of writing and art which Verandah Editors ask for. We're a student run publication, so we're unable to give feedback and are unable to return submissions. Please, please don't send us your only copy!

We're unable to pay you for your successful words and art, but we do give successful contributors a copy of Verandah 26 as token payment.

 

 

 

Formatting

 

All guidelines must be adhered to for submissions to be accepted and for editor happiness. Please note that we will only accept the first three submissions from each artist.

First submission must be accompanied by a $10 fee. For two or three submissions, the fee will total at $15. Submissions by current Deakin students are free (please provide your student ID number if you're a current student).


Here is the checklist your submission MUST have:

 

  • Times New Roman
  • 12 point
  • Double spacing (exceptions with script & concrete poetry)
  • Numbered pages
  • The document should only have the title of your work in the Footer and as the Heading
  • and your name should only appear on the cover letter
  • Fill in your own details in "Your name - title of work" and rename your file submission as this
  • Submissions should only be in .docs or .jpgs
  • Electronic Art submissions should have a 300dpi
  • Attach a separate cover letter which includes your name, address, email address, contact number and a fifty word, third-person bio
  • Verandah Literary and Art Journal's house style is Australian Standard: singular quotations and Australian spelling, realise and verbalise instead of the Americanised 'z'

 

Literary Submissions

 

Please note that we will only accept the first 3 submissions from each artist. (Rest easy, poets; a suite, this means a set of 3 or 4, shorter poems counts as one submission.)

 

Acceptance window from February 1st, 2011 to June 1st, 2011.

(Deadline for electronic submissions is midnight, June 1st 2011. Hard copy submissions must be postmarked on or before June 1st, 2011).

 

Short stories: we would prefer between 350 - 3,000 words. Stories over 2,000 words will need to be proportionally brilliant to hold out two shorter stories.

Poems: save your epics; poems/ suites of poems need to be fewer than 100 lines. Only well-polished, previously unpublished works accepted.

Scripts: under 5 - 7 minutes. That's 5 - 7 pages of properly formatted Courier New, not 5 - 7 minutes of single-spaced monologue. Only well-polished, previously unpublished works accepted.

Nonfiction: we would prefer between 350 - 2,000 words. Stories over 2,000 words will need to be proportionally brilliant to hold out two shorter stories. Only well-polished, previously unpublished works accepted.

 

Each year, Verandah offers a number of prizes for successful contributors, chosen and awarded by our sponsors. Prize details will be posted on our website towards the middle of the year.

 

Art and Design Submissions

Please note that we will only accept the first 3 submissions from each artist.

Email electronic copies by midnight, May 1st 2011. All artwork must be made available to Verandah for photographic imaging in June.

Artwork and photography: we welcome both full colour and black and white images. Verandah is slightly smaller than A4 size, and we're seeking full, half and quarter page submissions. Only quality fine art and previously unpublished works accepted. All submissions should be in the resolution of 300dpi, unless submitting by snail mail.

  • Download, print and complete this cover letter and paperclip it to the front of your submission(s)
  • Don't forget to check that you have adhered to our formatting and house style guidelines!
  • Send artwork/ photography as jpgs on a CD;
  • Include a cheque or money order ($10 for one entry, $15 for two or three) made out to Verandah.
