2009 Deakin Business Internship Awards

A business/education partnership in the Warrnambool region

The Deakin Business Internship program provides an opportunity for businesses in the Warrnambool region to foster relationships with Deakin University, whilst students have the opportunity to showcase their skills and attributes and almost certainly enhance employment opportunities. The Faculty of Business and Law Business Internship Program offers two elective units, MMI301 & MMI302.

The Deakin Business Internship Awards are open to all students enrolled in MMI301 or MMI302 at the Warrnambool campus and all businesses employing a Deakin intern in the Warrnambool region.

The winning student is selected on the basis of their grade in the unit and is awarded $500 and a certificate. The employer of that student receives the Deakin Educational Experience Provider Award as well as exposure at the Warrnambool Faculty of Business and Law Graduation Awards Ceremony.

Promoting local business

Through the Deakin Business Internship Awards program, the Faculty of Business and Law is establishing a co-operative framework to work with businesses in the Warrnambool region, providing an opportunity for Faculty students to undertake experiential learning while enhancing student engagement within the local region.

Offering expertise in key areas of business

The Faculty of Business and Law is at the forefront of research and business practice in the key areas of business – whether accounting, finance, information systems, management, human resource management, marketing, corporate finance or taxation law, as well as in a number of distinctive specialist areas. Working in partnership with government, major corporations and professional associations, it is seeking to extend its engagement with the Warrnambool business community through the Deakin Business Internship Awards program.

A two way partnership – the Business Internship unit

The Deakin Business Internship Awards program provides an opportunity for Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Management students to work within a practical business environment or to complete a defined project. There is no substitute for this sort of operational experience within the practical constraints of a commercial enterprise.

Benefits to the business:
  • Access to the observations, research and contribution of a senior university student
  • Exposure to current theory
  • Internship students are a no-cost resource for the host business
  • Opportunity to receive the Deakin Educational Experience Provider Award, which will lead to exposure at the Warrnambool Faculty of Business and Law Graduation Awards Ceremony

Expressions of interest

Expressions of interest to participate in the Deakin Business Internship Awards program are invited from businesses in the region, as well as from Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Management students.
