Advanced Standing (credit transfer)students

Advanced standing is the term used when the University allows prior study to count towards your Deakin degree. There are two aspects to advanced standing:

  1. Credit transfer, in which credit is transferred to a Deakin award program from completed or partly completed studies from other accredited institutions.
  2. Credit for prior learning (CPL), in which credit towards a Deakin award is granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through uncredentialled learning.

Qualifying for Advanced Standing

The Advanced Standing Database is a guide for students who have completed study at other tertiary institutions and wish to gain credit towards a Deakin course. Advanced standing into a Faculty of Business and Law course will only be granted when the appropriate paperwork has been completed. Final determination of advanced standing will be carried out by the Faculty's Advanced Standing Officers.

Application process for on-campus students – Direct application

You should apply for advanced standing when you apply for your course. Certified copies of all necessary supporting documents such as your original transcripts and certificates should be included. At enrolment you will then be advised of any eligible advanced standing and enrolled accordingly. A formal assessment will be sent to you within 2 weeks. If your enrolment needs any adjustment at this time it is your responsibility to amend your enrolment online using StudentConnect.

Application process for off-campus students

If you think you may qualify for advanced standing you need to apply when you send in your application for entry, making sure you include all the necessary supporting documents such as your original or certified transcripts and certificates. You will be advised of the success of your application when the University's offer of enrolment is sent to you. You cannot apply for advanced standing for studies you have not yet completed. If you were still completing other study when you first made your application for entry, and you are subsequently successful with those studies, you can apply for additional credit in early to mid-January. A formal assessment will be sent to you within 2 weeks. If your enrolment needs any adjustment at this time it is your responsibility to vary your enrolment online in accordance with the timelines set out in the handbook.

Advanced standing is not normally granted for studies completed elsewhere once you have started your Deakin course. If you do wish to apply for advanced standing for any other studies you are doing concurrent with your Deakin studies, you must obtain Faculty approval beforehand from an enrolment officer.
