Family Business

Why study Family Business?

Deakin's Family Business program has been developed to provide management education specific to the needs of owners and managers of family businesses. Family businesses range in size from small, medium or large businesses in terms of employees and turnover and take many forms (public, private and sole traders). This course is relevant to family members, non-family members and industry consultants (advisors).

Family businesses are driven by the qualities, values and skills established by their founders. This may be a great strength, but as the business grows, additional governance processes and management structures may be required. Inevitably, as more family and employees become involved, responsibilities and roles within the organisation change and can become blurred. Personal relationships can impact negatively on the management, goals and objectives of the business.

For those working in, and advising, family businesses, these issues create a challenging environment.

This program provides students with the opportunity to consider the issues that arise within this socio-economic environment that typifies family business. The program considers:

  • Family and business lifecycles;
  • Values in the family and their impact on the business;
  • Succession;
  • Professional business management practices
  • Unique family-to-business practices; and
  • Effective intervention in family and business activities.

This program has been designed with the busy professional in mind, allowing for off-campus study. The practical, problem-solving skills offered by this program will ensure students can translate their learning directly into the workplace.
