Professionals Week:
Equipping you to succeed in business and law!

Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool campuses

The intention of Professionals Week was to give business and law students the opportunity to concentrate on personal and professional development. Professionals Week featured a week of seminars, workshops, skills development, networking events and fun specifically designed to be relevant, responsive and innovative for all students in the Faculty of Business and Law.

To equip students to succeed in business and law, Professionals Week gave students the opportunity to:

  • Learn how to prepare a resume and covering letter; and how to interview and address key selection criteria
  • Listen to guest speakers from industry, business and law, featuring Deakin business and law alumni
  • Attend seminars, workshops and get "hands on", relevant advice from those who know
  • Learn what employers are looking for
  • Experience life at Deakin University and practice life/work balance
  • Improve academic skills to assist University study success
  • Understand their own learning styles and implement strategies for business and law study success
  • Participate in a multi-cultural celebration of student diversity in the Faculty of Business and Law

Off-Campus students

Events in Professionals Week have been streamed online to cater to Off-Campus students' needs.

Professionals Week has the objective of improving graduate outcomes for all students in the Faculty of Business and Law to ensure all students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for:

  • Employment
  • Further study
  • Lifelong learning and research
  • Life in the community/

The events in the week were designed to address a number of Faculty-wide objectives, specifically:

  • To improve graduate outcomes and generic skills activities;
  • To improve the quality of the Faculty's teaching and learning program;
  • To enhance the career opportunities for our graduating students;
  • To provide opportunities for improved partnerships with Deakin alumni and the business and law profession in Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool;
  • To celebrate the contribution of international students in the Faculty and encourage cultural understanding;
  • To strengthen partnerships between the Faculty and Divisions and representative groups of the University, including Student Life - Careers and Academic, Information Technology Services, the Deakin Library, Deakin Marketing, Deakin International, various Faculty-related student societies and clubs.

Professionals Week is an event in the spirit of collaboration and partnership for the purpose of developing and supporting student professional development, in an appropriate and engaging environment. Planning of Professionals Week was in consultation with the Interim Dean Professor Barry Cooper; the Associate Dean Associate Professor Greg Wood; educational developers and all schools in the Faculty; the Careers and Academic units of Student Life, Deakin International; DUSA, Deakin Commerce Students' Society, Deakin Business Students' Society, Deakin University Commerce Society, Deakin Law Students' Society, Toastmasters, Deakin Debating Society, Deakin Commerce Alumni; Deakin Health and Well-being; Deakin's Divisions of IT Service; Knowledge Media; Media; Marketing; the Institute of Teaching and Learning; the Library and the Vice-Chancellor's Office. Professionals Week has also been developed with the Career Industry Council of Australia's National Career Development event and Deakin Career Month activities.
