Business Internship Program

Success story Rick Moiler

Hard work pays dividends

Rick Moiler completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree with majors in human resource management and management.

Like many students, Rick had a number of part time jobs while studying but also found time during his busy schedule to contribute to University life as Vice-President of the Commerce Society. To maximise his employment prospects after graduation Rick realised he needed an edge and took on the daunting challenge of completing two business internships as part of his degree.

Rick negotiated internships with Adecco Australia and Coles Myer Ltd (in collaboration with the Coles Myer Deakin Alliance). At Adecco Rick was involved in specialist recruitment. Activities focused on a total overview of the recruitment process, including screening, interviewing and reference checking.

At Coles Myer he was placed in the Kmart Australia Human Resources Group. Activities included a review of recruitment procedures for the Business Management Traineeship Program and an analysis of succession management practices.

Using these experiences as a springboard Rick applied for the Coles Myer Graduate Program – a challenge in itself with over 1600 applicants competing for just two HR graduate positions nationally.

The selection process was exhaustive but, with the experience of his internships behind him and confidence in his own ability, Rick was successful in gaining a graduate position.
