You are invited to a one-day workshop on the application of meta-analysis to economics and commerce. The workshop will address current developments and issues in meta-analysis, with presentations on human rights and foreign aid, foreign direct investment, drugs and alcohol, publication selection, school cost functions, audit fees, executive pay and performance, pension wealth and private savings, and inequality and economic growth.
Presenters include Professor Tom Stanley (Hendrix College, USA), Professor Martin Paldam (Aarhus University, Denmark), Professor David Hay (University of Auckland), Dr. James Fogarty (Tasman Institute), and Dr Margaret Giles (Edith Cowan).
The workshop offers an excellent opportunity for all researchers and post-graduate students to participate in the meta-analysis experience.

The School of Accounting, Economics and Finance hosted its annual Report (770kb) to the Profession and Student Awards for Melbourne Wednesday 7 May 2008 at the RACV City Club Melbourne and Geelong Monday 12 May 2008 Waterfront campus.
The events were attended by representatives from CPA Australia, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia, National Institute of Accountants, Financial Planning Association, Productivity Commission, Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance, KPMG, Deloitte, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Powercor, Gordon Institute of TAFE and many others. Deakin VIP guests Professor Barry Cooper (interim Dean, Faculty of Business and Law), Dr Irene Irvine (Pro Vice Chancellor) and Professor Pasquale Sgro (Associate Dean Research) also attended to provide support to the School and its activities.
The Report to the Profession focused on the School's performance in the areas of teaching and learning, corporate and community liaison, and research. The School's top Burwood and Geelong students were acknowledged at the Awards Presentation where they were presented with prizes sponsored by employer organisations and professional bodies. The School's award winning Warrnambool students were presented with their prizes at Faculty of Business and Law Warrnambool graduation ceremony. Congratulations to all award recipients.
The guest speaker for Melbourne was Mr Rob Hogarth, Partner, KPMG and in Geelong Mr Hayden Torney, Muirfield Financial Services Both events were a great success and provided an opportunity for our sponsors, employer organisations and professional bodies to meet our high achieving students.
Professor Nick Feltovich, University of Aberdeen is currently visiting the School on the International visitor programme, sponsored by Theoretical and Applied Economics Research (TAER). He is working with Professor Mike Kidd on a project on 'Experimental Approaches to Modelling Affirmative Action'.
Professor Ron Oaxaca, University of Arizona, world renowned Labour Economist is visiting the School as our Honorary Professor. Ron is also working on the above project on affirmative action.
Both visitors are included on Mike Kidd's ARC Discovery grant proposal.
The School of Accounting, Economics and Finance in conjunction with the Office of the Vice Chancellor, Regional and Rural, hosted a very successful Public Lecture at the Warrnambool campus on May 8th. The guest speaker was prominent environmental economist Professor Jeff Bennett, who is Professor and Director of the Environmental Management Programme at the Crawford School of Economics and Government, Australian National University.

The topical lecture, “Economics and the environment, friends or foe?”, provided an overview of the role of economics in environmental management. The interdisciplinary nature of the audience contributed to stimulating discussion and highlighted the value of communication between disciplines in confronting environmental challenges.
