2008 Chinese Time Use Survey

Summary

In 2008 the People's Republic of China undertook their first time use survey in 10 selected provinces (Beijing, Hebei, Helongjiang, Zhejiang, Anhui, Henan, Guangdong, Sichuang, Yunan, Gansu), following basic principles of international standards and methods of time use statistics.

The 2008 Time Use Survey was organised by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and implemented by the above 10 Provincial Survey Organisations. The NBS also provided direct training for survey supervisors across 202 counties (cities and districts). The target groups were people aged 15 to 74 in the selected households. The surveyed households included the entire current (at that time) urban and township national samplings and some selected rural national samplings of the 10 municipalities and provinces.

Available for download is the English translation of the summary of the survey results [288KB PDF] published by the NBS and translated by Mr. Henry Lee using funds from the School of Information Systems, Faculty of Business and Law, Deakin University, and organised through the Australian Time Use Research Group.

The original Chinese language documents are available at the National Bureau of Statistics China website.
