Economics

What is Economics?

Economics is about choices and human behaviour. It is about the organisation of our society, and how diverse individual choices and trade-off's are somehow coordinated in a way that ensures we have access to the goods and services we want. It is the study of how businesses, governments and households make choices about resource use. Economics is relevant to the study of business, finance, international markets and trade, health, transport, democracy and voting patterns, the environment and policies on global warming, as well as social equity and well being.

Career opportunities

Studying economics provides the background for careers in business and finance as an analyst or forecaster, a researcher or a manager. Fields include banking, finance, public administration, manufacturing, retail, agriculture and mining. Economists also work in governments at all levels as analysts and advisors. Economists can work anywhere in the world, either in big business, the finance and banking sector, or as a part of any of a number of large non-government organisations such as the World Bank in Washington or the OECD in Paris. Economists can also work in education or for community organisations.
