Health Informatics

What is Health Informatics?

Health Informatics studies the use of information communication technologies to assist doctors, nurses, specialists, pharmacists and various healthcare professionals in improving their healthcare practice and the patient's health outcome. The Health Informatics major sequence aims to teach students about the application and management of technologies of the information age in a healthcare context including diagnosis, care planning, care delivery and outcome evaluation. Students will also learn methods and techniques to develop health information systems and services, appreciate implications and issues such as security and privacy of patient electronic health records, and discuss emerging trends and exciting opportunities in health informatics. Examples include clinical information systems, telemedicine, aged care informatics and consumer health informatics.

Career opportunities

Careers in the health care industry include data/information manager, project manager, systems analyst, programmer or clinical administrator. Careers also exist in government and private organisations processing, administering and managing health data.
