Ruby works at Deakin University as a sessional lecturer, tutor and research fellow. She has been accepted to study her PhD on the impact of culture and interpersonal skills in Sino-Australian business relationships.
‘I worked as a medical scientist for some years. However, after my son was born, I felt isolated and craving mental stimulation, so I commenced a MBA.
Returning to study was quite difficult for various reasons. The obvious one is that I had a small child to care for; I had to pay for my tuition myself; and coming from a scientific background I had to completely change my mindset towards the material.
The flexible nature of off-campus studies was very beneficial to me. Even though I had to grab the odd half hour here and there, I found I could set myself goals and work systematically through the course guide. Naturally this took a great deal of discipline.
The very nature of my relationship with my husband has changed. He runs his own business, he asks me for strategic advice. ‘What strategies would you employ in this instance?’ There’s more of a synergy now, as if we are business partners.
Now I am working for Deakin University as a sessional lecturer. I love it because it is so varied and I have a great deal of interaction with people.’
