Flexible Learning

Flexible learning at Deakin is a distinctive approach to teaching, learning and the student experience which provides choices about the way you study.

Flexible place

In the Faculty of Business and Law you can study full time, or part time, on or off campus, or combine a mix of study modes. You can attend lectures on campus and receive face-to-face teaching, or study remotely from home or work.

Our flexible approach is enhanced by Deakin’s use of technology that enriches learning experiences and prepares graduates to be confident and competent using online technologies and in online environments. Deakin’s lecture streaming service gives you online access to recorded lectures for many units. In addition to video and audio streaming, academic staff can provide their lectures as podcasts and downloadable MP3s.

Flexible courses

Our courses, such as the Bachelor of Commerce, are flexible so you can choose your specialist areas as you progress through your course and tailor your degree to match your career goals. You don’t have to decide on your major areas of study when you first enrol but can make your choices as your knowledge, interests and skills develop.

You can enrol in professional bachelor degrees such as law, commerce and management straight from secondary school, without having to complete another degree first, allowing you to start your career and earn an income sooner.

We also have residential programs at postgraduate level and are developing ‘compacts’ where students may choose a condensed period of study but balanced with their family life.

Flexible timing: the trimester system

Deakin now operates a trimester system with three 12-week study periods. Study in Trimester 3 is not compulsory – it just provides another option for study.

There are many advantages of the trimester system, including greater flexibility for you to plan study around work and lifestyle commitments, and flexibility for you to choose the pace at which learning proceeds. The trimester system provides options to commence your course at different times of the year, to fast-track your study, or take time off from study to travel, work or balance study with family responsibilities. It enables you to speed up or slow down your study whilst still completing within the normal time frames of degree study.
